Where to Eat:
6 Sumptuous San Sebastian Restaurants
Every journey has a flavour, every place a taste. Whether it’s a Michelin-starred meal, a multi-course extravaganza or fresh fish at a seaside cantina, we believe you can’t really call yourself a cultural adventurer if you don’t embrace the local food and drink. In the latest installment of our Where to Eat series, we recommend a few of our favourite San Sebastian restaurants where you can do just that.

Chef Martin Berasategui specializes in light, imaginative, fresh and immediate cuisine, deeply rooted in its environment, prepared with precision, and served in a captivating atmosphere of extreme comfort.
Closed Sunday evening, Monday & Tuesday all day. Out of town (taxi ride).
Arzak
Using market-fresh ingredients that determine the menu, Arzak specializes in “spiritually Basque cuisine” and idiosyncratic tastes.
Closed Sunday & Monday. Out of town (taxi ride).
Akelarre
With a jaw-dropping room overlooking the Bay of Biscay, Pedro Subijana’s New Basque cuisine rivals the spectacular setting. With a number of seafood dishes, classic and newer creations are yours to choose from and explore.

See (and Sip) For Yourself
A contrast between ancient vines and avant-garde architecture, roll through Rioja and the Ribeira del Duero on our Spanish Wine Country Biking trip. With sweeping vistas and rolling hills along the way, pedal to secluded monasteries and castles, sip vintages in the very fields where they grow.

Mugaritz
The brainchild of Andoni Luiz Aduriz, you will be wowed on a plate with a playful, whimsical, conceptual take on Basque food, remixing and recontextualizing a twenty-course meal that unfolds like a theatrical production! Two Michelin stars.
Closed Sunday evening, all day Monday, Tuesday midday.
Kokotxa
A twist on Basque food with personality! The name of the restaurant itself refers to the fleshy part of lower jaw of a fish, a Basque delicacy. Needless to say, expect lots of fresh seafood (the bay’s nearby)! Two Michelin stars.
Closed Sunday evening, all day Monday. Located in old part of town.

Mirador de Ulía
Chef Rubén Trincado earned his first Michelin star in 2011 and offers innovative cooking rooted in tradition in a gorgeous location with views overlooking Zurriola beach.
