When Jennifer Alterman offered us this account of her biking adventure in Argentina, we felt there’s no better way to convey what a breakthrough trip this was for her than to simply print her personal account. Indeed, it’s clear that this experience will forever change how she chooses to see the world from here on in.

Taking a bike trip has always been a dream of Ken’s. For me, it sounded like a lot of work to see a country, and I prefer the car, train and plane mode of travel. So when good friends of ours mentioned they were doing a bike trip in Argentina, I knew this would be a dream come true for Ken. I was told you “can always get in the van” if you don’t want to bike anymore. So we signed up, started our training, and in no time at all we were on our way.

Everyone except us in the group of 16 riders had been on at least one or more bike trips. We were the bike virgins, but being a natural athlete, biking for Ken was no problem. But I surprised myself and NEVER got in the van, took most of the biking extensions and did the entire “Century” ride (100 Km’s!).

DETAILED ITINERARY

Argentina is a vast and beautiful country. If we had to pick one of our favorite experiences it would have to be our last ride. It started at 13,000 feet and finished at the salt flats. On our way down we saw burros, vicuna (from the llama family) and horses, haciendas in the mountain valleys, sheep and goat herders, a rock formation called Turtle Rock and incredible mountains striped with vivid color. It was breathtakingly beautiful and we loved seeing the country this way. Argentina I could go on and on about the incredible rides, fabulous guides, drivers and bike engineers, hotels, meals, and wine. It was a trip of a lifetime for both of us and we can’t wait to do it again! Vietnam, Catalonia and Provence are all trips we are looking at, and next time our kids (21 and 24) want to go with us! We’re bike virgins no more!
