5 Incredible Family Adventures in Africa
You’ll have to forgive me for falling back on hyperbole, but when it comes to family adventures in Africa, the only words that seem to approximate this place are “exotic,” “magical” and “unforgettable.”
This continent is a vast array of startling contrasts and ravishing beauty, making it the perfect place for kids to learn and adults to awe. While a family vacation to Africa can take dozens of potential forms, below I’ve collected a few of my favourite ways to immerse kids (of all ages, of course) in the cradle of humankind.
1. South Africa
From the peak of Table Mountain to the plains of Kruger National Park, South Africa offers families an adventure as diverse as Africa itself. The landscapes and waterways of the Cape provide both an exceptional playground and a chance to learn about the ways that some of its townships still struggle. A short flight away, the Sabi Sand Game Reserve will introduce you to the Little Five, the Big Five and the state of wildlife conservation in modern-day Africa.
2. Botswana
A vibrant gem nestled within Africa’s south, Botswana offers one of the most sought-after wildlife experiences in the world. From the unique ecosystem of the Okavango Delta to the waterways and woodlands of the Selinda Reserve, the best of Africa is on display here.
A Family Journey For the Ages
On our South Africa Family Adventure, we weave together the most colourful facets of South Africa, from the peaks of Table Mountain, to the Big Five that roam the wilderness of the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve. This is one experience your family will never forget. (Lions have that effect on people.)
DETAILED ITINERARY3. Namibia
Wedged between the Kalahari and the South Atlantic, Namibia’s potential is as vast as its varied landscapes: wild seascapes, rugged mountains, lonely deserts, stunning wildlife, colonial cities and nearly unlimited elbow room.
4. Morocco
We’ve waxed poetic about Morocco’s family vacation potential before, and with good reason. The delights of magical Marrakech, Berber villages, incredible culinary culture and stunning oases will please mom and dad, while camel and donkey rides, kid-friendly kite surfing, and a ropes course will keep the kids smiling all the way to the souk.
5. Tanzania
Home to some of the world’s coolest exotic animals, (not to mention this little thing called the Serengeti), Tanzania is perfect for families with an adventurous spirit and desire to engage in their environment. The natural diversity here presents a truly breathtaking spectacle, from rolling hills, open plains and ground water forest, to massive volcanoes, and the Serengeti Migration.
Hi Michele, I’m glad to see you are still in the business! My friend and I joined you on your first BR trip to Bhutan. I still have photos of you dancing like a native in the lights of the jeeps, Darjeeling maybe?
I long to take my grandchildren to Africa – still a bit young – but perhaps in a year or 2 so please keep me on your list. It would certainly be fun to travel with you again.
Safe Journeys till then –
